Glute Bridge — Basic Variation, Nuances, and Technique

Shoulder Bridge

Let us look at the basic variation of the "shoulder bridge" exercise, which allows you to activate the gluteal muscles with incredible precision.

This configuration has several advantages, namely:

  1. This is an excellent way to supplement the hip adduction phase that is lacking in wide-stance squats. This means that the activity of the adductor muscle group will increase dramatically.

  2. This position extremely effectively engages the posterior thigh muscles, which not only extend but also adduct the hip.

  3. Synchronization of the muscles responsible for external and internal rotation, adduction and abduction, flexion and extension of the hip. This occurs during the phase of movement that is extremely similar to the push-off phase in the most evolutionarily significant action — walking.

  4. Integrating this exercise into the training process dramatically increases the neurological activity of the muscles located on the posterior surface of the pelvis, thighs, and lower legs. These are precisely the muscles responsible for propelling the body in all directions. This, in turn, contributes to a sharp increase in strength indicators, unloading the quadriceps femoris, and consequently, the knee joint.

It is recommended to perform the shoulder bridge in this configuration (feet and hips together) for people involved in strength disciplines such as weightlifting, powerlifting, and especially CrossFit.

Technique:

  • Lie on the floor, bend your hips and knees, place your feet and hips together.
  • To increase control over the position of your hips at the knee area, you can hold a thin object (such as a notebook or phone) throughout the entire movement.
  • While activating the posterior and inner thigh muscles, as well as the gluteal muscles, move your pelvis forward while simultaneously tilting it backward.
  • Aim to push your pelvis past the anatomical position. Over time, you need to achieve hip hyperextension in a range of at least 15 degrees. This is the minimum required to walk and run correctly without involving the spine in a pathological process.
  • Return to the starting position.

This exercise and its modifications are an excellent addition to squats, lunges, deadlifts, and stiff-leg deadlifts, and therefore can be used by professional athletes competing in fitness categories, as they have a pronounced shaping effect. These exercises can be applied in the training of skaters, speed skaters, and swimmers, as they allow, through the stimulation of skin receptors due to interaction with the surface, to achieve ideal pelvic positioning with a minimal rotational component in the spine region. This is extremely important for these sports because the lack of control over pelvic position leads to oscillatory movements, and consequently, to a reduction in the efficiency of forward linear displacement, whether in water or on the track. Additionally, it can be used for rehabilitation, without loading the spinal column, while loading the gluteal muscles in a near-sport mode. These movements are highly effective for restoring the gait pattern.
