Training is not just about performing exercises — it is a comprehensive and individual approach to health and physical development. Without a deep understanding of a client's health history, athletic experience, lifestyle, and goals, critically important details may be overlooked, increasing the risk of injuries and reducing the effectiveness of the training process. When problems are identified, the trainer has the opportunity to timely adjust the training plan and refer the client to a medical specialist for an evaluation and recommendations.
Your responsibility as a professional is to ensure safety, avoid contraindicated loads, and make training as beneficial as possible.
What questions should you ask?
- General Health Questions
Find out about any illnesses, injuries, chronic conditions, past surgeries, and medical contraindications. Pay special attention to conditions such as cardiovascular disease, joint problems, diabetes, and allergies.
- Athletic Experience
Find out how and with what intensity the client has exercised before, what types of activities they preferred, and whether they had any injuries. This information will help determine their accustomed workload and potential risks.
- Lifestyle
Assess their eating habits, sleep quality, physical activity level outside of training, and whether they have any harmful habits. All of these factors directly affect training results and the recovery process.
Questions for assessing motivation and program planning:
- Goals and Expectations
Clearly identify why the client came: weight loss, building muscle mass, improving endurance, or achieving specific athletic results. Goals should be specific, measurable, and realistic.
- Motivation and Capabilities
It is important to determine the client's motivation level — how much time they are willing to dedicate to training, whether they prefer home workouts or going to the gym, and whether they have access to exercise equipment.

Important: before collecting information, make sure to obtain the client's verbal consent for the collection and processing of medical data.
If the client does not provide consent, request a medical evaluation from a doctor regarding the absence or presence of any contraindications and any special recommendations.
